Applied Behaviour Analysis

ABA

What is ABA?

ABA stands for Applied Behaviour Analysis. It is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behaviour. ABA applies the principles of behaviour to real-world situations with the goal of improving socially significant behaviors. ABA is considered an evidence-based best practice.

Who uses it?

This therapeutic approach is often used to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but is also applied to various other contexts, such as education, healthcare, and organizational behaviour management.

A qualified and trained behaviour analyst (BCBA) designs and directly oversees the program and goal setting. When working with people with ASD, they customize the ABA program to each learner's skills, needs, interests, preferences and family situation.

What does it do?

With regards to teaching skills:

  • Increase language and communication skills

  • Improve attention, focus, social skills, memory, and academics

  • Decrease problem behaviours
